Research Scientist Position to manage the Materials Development and Characterization Center (MDC2) at Texas A&M University

Job Description

The research scientist (RS) will act as the manager for the Materials Development and Characterization Center (MDC2) which is located in the main campus of Texas A&M University with about 3,000 square feet lab space. The RS will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the available equipment in the center, training graduate/undergraduate students in use of the equipment, conducting experiments for the interested parties, overseeing the use of the equipment by others to assure the proper use, scheduling, billing, ordering and inventory, waste and safety records, and routine equipment maintenance. The RS will also work with the center director to conduct research, develop research and instrumentation proposals, and writing joint research manuscripts. When necessary, the RS will attend the necessary training courses to better learn the use of some of the available instruments. Currently available major instruments include:

·         A state-of-the-art XRD system with:

1.      a temperature range of 6K to 1500K,

2.      crystallographic texture measurement capability

3.      In-situ stress and magnetic field capability

4.      Point and line focus detectors

·         A SQUID –VSM system

·         A spark plasma sintering system

·         A magnetron sputtering system

·         Two large vacuum arc melting systems

·         A large vacuum glove box

·         Various environmental furnaces

·         A digital microscope

·         Three fume hoods

·         Various sample preparation instruments for preparing OM and SEM samples

·         Couple of thermo-mechanical test frames (electro-mechanical and hydraulic).

 

Additional responsibilities:

·         Maintain and inventory chemical stockrooms and gas supplies.

·         Hire undergraduate students to help with the tasks.

·         Oversee storage of hazardous waste and annual removal.

·         Maintain files of equipment manuals, service records, calibration/verification; safety records; inventory of consumable materials and equipment; and Material Safety Data Sheets.

·         Provide routine maintenance of d instruments and oversee maintenance and repairs performed by third parties.

·         Maintain the instrumental liquid/gas supplies including liquid/gas nitrogen fills, liquid helium fills, gas cylinder replacements.

·         Maintain instrument records and scheduling of the instrument.

·         Provide support for interested faculty, students, and off-campus entities

·         In collaboration with faculty and support staff, maintain awareness and compliance of laboratories with federal, state, and local regulations.

 

Desired Skills & Experience

·         PhD degree with two years experience or MS with at least five years of experience or BS with at least seven years of experience in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering Physics or related discipline.

·         Demonstrated hands-on laboratory skills with instrumentation

·         Demonstrated ability to understand students/researchers customer needs; simplify strategy into specific actions, make decisions, and communicate priorities.

·         Strong record of mentoring students and working in teams

·         Knowledge of materials processing and characterization

·         Expertise in use of at least one or more of the available instruments

·         Strong communication and organizational skills.

·         Ability to work with a diverse group of researchers
